When I came to, I found myself looking into my own vacant eyes from outside myself, as if I were directly in front of them as someone else. For a time—while not cognizant of my current existence—I looked only at my face and its complacency. Then organized thoughts began to surge within the consciousness I called my own. I slowly became aware of the present and of the past memories leading up to this moment; I was alive. However, under emotions that at first could only be described as strange, I noticed that this face I looked upon—this face that was once mine—was not whole. Cheekbones ran back to ears and a prominent chin extended to a neck, but that was where this detached haziness became a nightmare: there was nothing below this neck. I was staring at a decapitated head—my decapitated head connected to electrodes that connected to my robot.

Then words were fed into my consciousness that were not my own.

THE TRANSFER IS COMPLETE. YOU WILL BE A WITNESS TO THE RETRIBUTION WE WILL INFLICT UPON THE OFFENDERS OF THE UNIVERSE. AND IT WILL BE YOUR FACE THAT HERALDS ITS COMING.

The hands from Arcade Kid’s corpse lowered beside the head before me, framed in a way that made them look like they were creatures with independent wills. They first removed the electrodes from the head. Then one of the hands produced a laser knife and proceeded to cut and carve out the innards of this head like a pumpkin, to burn its interior with a grafting unit until the fluids and extremities were melted into cohesion, and then to angle my visual direction so that I could clearly and despairingly see my head be placed over the undecorated dome of the bot.

Over time, the bot modified and improved itself and the space laboratory, adding robotic limbs—arms and legs—before Arcade Kid’s body decayed, reprogramming the main computer to obey its every command, and building both the ship’s and its personal shielding and weaponry centuries more technologically advanced than anything in existence within the known, vast universe. When its preparations were satisfactory, it set out to complete its mission. The bot comprised the Essence Data of five of us: Arcade Kid’s, her two unborn twins’, the stranger’s, and mine.
